Acid Washed
A method of treating the stone with an acid to bring out the vivid colours of the tile, usually only seen when polished.
Aged
A non polished or distressed finish to stone.
Antique
A non polished, worn or distressed look similar to an aged finish.
Basalt
A dense volcanic rock formed from cooled lava. Often found as paving or contemporary flooring
Brushed
A method of ageing stone using metal brushes giving the stone a soft textured finish.
Callibrated
Usually refers to slate, whereby the thickness has to be set to certain dimensions. We only sell calibrated slates.
Chipped / Chiselled Edge
A form of distressing the edges of stone in order for them to look more worn or rugged.
Cleft
Referring to slate tiles whereby the face of the tiles have natural split levels. Our cleft slate is from Brazil.
Cross Cut
A term which relates to the way Travertine has been cut from the block. Cross cut Travertine is the predominant cut of travertine used in this country.
Filled
A term which is related mainly to travertine whereby the natural surface cavities and pits are pre-filled. As this is mechanically done, some bumps or cavities are still evident.
Granite
A very hard, robust rock that is most often found in a polished form. Available in a vast range of vivid and intense colours.
Honed
Relating to the treatment of stone whereby the surface is mechanically smoothed to give a matt finish.
Lithofin
A range of care products we recommend for cleaning, sealing and maintaining natural stone.
Marble
A classic stone used for thousands of years, often synonymous with opulence. Available in a vast range of colours and can often be characterised with veining.
Opus Pattern
A way of using a repeating pattern of various tiles sizes to create a random effect. Often done when using tumbled, aged or chiselled edge stone.
Pallet
A crate or wooden board used to transport your delivery on.
Polished
A term referring to a tile that has been mechanically worked to achieve a high gloss, most often found in granite and marbles. Polished stone can come in a degree of sheen and will not necessarily be a high buff polish. Different stones can be polished to different levels.
Pump Truck
A piece of equipment used by the delivery driver to pull your pallet to the nearest and safest point to your home.
Quartz Based Engineered Stone
This is a manufactured product which sets ground quartz in resin producing an engineered stone tougher than granite and with less than 1% porosity.
Riven or Rivened
A term relating to the natural bumpy face of slate, limestone or sandstone. A riven texture is similar to ripples on the water
Rustic
Where the stone appears in a more natural or aged and worn looking format. Also relates to slate tiles which have a variety of rusty shades running throughout.
Sandstone
With a granular surface texture, we have an interior and exteror range of sandstone tiles, cobbles and flags.
Slate
A dense and robust rock available in array of colours and vast range of sizes. Slate is highly versatile and can be in used in contemporary or classic settings.
Tail Lift
The lift end of a van or lorry used for lowering your pallet to the ground, which enables you to take delivery without the use of a forklift.
Travertine
A hard and durable stone, which is increasingly popular. Usually found in various shades of creamy beige and in many formats. Travertine naturally has many bumps and cavities which are often found mechanically smoothed over and filled (aka Honed & Filled). This is to allow better usage.
Tumbled
A form of ageing the stone, whereby the stone is spun in a tumbling machine leaving the stone with rounded edges and a soft textured surface.
Ultra
A range of grouts and adhesive we recommend. We can supply these alongside your stone or separately.
Unfilled
Usually refers to travertine, but also to some limestone. This is where the surface of the stone has been left in its natural state with all the bumps and cavities in tact. Unfilled stone is usually brushed to smooth out any rough patches.
Vein Cut
A way in which travertine or marble is cut so that the natural veining is evident.
